A Two Dogs Company is the team centred on the theatre-maker and artist Kris Verdonck and represents the continuation of his small Stilllab company. In recent years, Verdonck’s artistic practice has developed, expanded and internationalised to such an extent that its growth can only be consolidated if a small, flexible organisation is able to follow up on and structure the work on a permanent basis. Kris Verdonck is receiving an operational subsidy for the first time, which immediately signalled the start of A Two Dogs Company and his residency at the Kaaitheater.
In view of the nature of its work, A Two Dogs Company cannot assume the form of a traditional company, nor that of a collective, non-hierarchical group initiative. In his work, Kris Verdonck calls on scientists and also technicians, engineers and performers. These joint ventures are not full-time, but are continuous: the artistic, intellectual or practical dialogue and research is deepened and extended without interruption.
In order to allow this network to function optimally, Kris Verdonck has put together a small artistic coordination team around him. Theatre that is focused on technology needs a team comparable to the way things are done in a scientific unit. It is therefore no longer just about the work of one young dog, but about the practice of several dogs playing together. The new name refers to the poem Ich möchte gern zwei kleine Hunde sein by Friedrich Torberg.
Kris Verdonck’s education – he studied art, architecture and theatre – is reflected in the theatre work he does: it lies on the border between art and theatre, between installation and performance, between dance and architecture. He often also presents combinations of various installations or performances.
In 2010, Kris Verdonck will be working on K (working title), a production commissioned by Frie Leysen for Theater der Welt in Essen (D).
