Het Gevolg was founded in 1983. Initially active as a sort of social workplace before such a concept existed, it was quickly transformed into a professional company and soon acquired a prominent place in Flemish youth theatre under the leadership of artistic director, producer and author Ignace Cornelissen. Het Gevolg developed into a dynamic house which aims to touch, stimulate and give food for thought to a wide audience. In doing so, Cornelissen attempts to bridge the divide between youth and adult theatre.

To begin with, Het Gevolg created accessible youth performances characterised by fantasy, social awareness and humour. In 2001, having frequently worked with other companies, Ignace Cornelissen opted decisively to create theatre for both adults and children with Het Gevolg.

In the meantime, Het Gevolg has been restyled as a production company in order to better meet contemporary theatre-makers’ need to be able to work flexibly. The company aims to attract interesting artists by offering all the facilities and know-how necessary for the creation and performance of a theatrical work under the best conditions.

After a long nomadic existence, Het Gevolg today has its own building in its home town of Turnhout, containing an auditorium, a rehearsal room large enough to be used as a small theatre and a workshop. In addition, Het Gevolg’s productions travel extensively throughout Flanders and the Netherlands.

In all its projects, Het Gevolg opts for a balance between tradition and innovation. For example, they often choose plays from the classic repertoire which form the inspiration for a creative adaptation, also for children. Het Gevolg regularly commissions new writing and is always on the lookout for new inspirational texts. As a playwright, Cornelissen has himself written a number of pieces, including De Jongen van Zee, Wintersprookje and Hendrik de Vijfde, some of which have also been performed abroad.

Het Gevolg has a special affinity for its home region, which is reflected in both the choice of people with whom it collaborates and in the sources of inspiration for its productions. A notable example of this is the series of location performances Littekens in het Landschap, in which the company seeks out prominent locations in the area around Turnhout which have had or continue to have a social or economic impact on the region.
