Bloet is a Brussels theatre company which has been successfully staging productions in Belgium and abroad for 29 years. The key figure is the theatre-maker Jan Decorte. His work is highly innovative and occupies a leading place on the European theatre scene. Decorte is a writer, director and actor. He is assisted by his partner in life and art, Sigrid Vinks. Together they form the artistic core of Bloet, which has its roots in the former Het Trojaanse Paard theatre company, founded in Antwerp in March 1971.
During the 1970s, this theatre collective mainly created socio-politically committed performances. The beginning of the 1980s saw a change of Zeitgeist as punk and post-modernism arrived on the scene. The company’s initial political commitment lost its momentum. In 1982, Jan Decorte was appointed artistic director and began investigating alternative forms of theatre with the company (Kleur is alles, Aids trilogy).
At the end of the 1980s, the name changed to Jan Decorte en Cie. The company lost its operating subsidy, but decided to continue working nevertheless. From that point on, Jan Decorte began writing pieces in which classic plays were reduced to their essence. Poetic, condensed works in a unique childlike language such as In het Moeras, Meneer, de zot & tkint, Titus Andonderonikustmijnklote and finally Bloetwollefduivel. This latter production is one of the major works in Jan Decorte’s oeuvre, and nothing could ever be the same again. Since 1994, the company has gone under its current name of Bloet.
Bloet regularly works with other companies such as the Roovers and Comp.Marius.
Bakchai, a new play by Jan Decorte based on Euripides’ The Bacchae, will be premiering at the Kaaitheater at the beginning of 2010. This production sees Jan Decorte and Sigrid Vinks working with the actors Sara De Bosschere and Benny Claessens.
