In 2003, Berlin launched its Holocene series, after the name of the current geological era. The starting point for each individual project is always a city or region somewhere in this world. The result is a series of intriguing city portraits.

Berlin is characterised by its focus on content-based research, taking the time and space for it, and, depending upon the outcome of this research, choosing one of more media. JERUSALEM was the first part of the Holocene cycle: a penetrating view of one of the most complex cities in the world is shown on three screens. For Holocene 2, IQALUIT, an installation with seven screens was built. The work is a portrait of the capital city of the Inuit in northern Canada.

BONANZA or Holocene 3 is the portrait of what is officially the smallest town in Colorado (USA): seven residents in five occupied houses, a mayor and a town council. Nothing more, nothing less. Berlin depicts this micropolis on five screens and in a scale model. MOSCOW or Holocene 4 is set in a tent with six moving screens, a string quartet and a pianist. A portrait of the metropolis that is Moscow.

Berlin performs its works on various circuits: theatres, exhibition spaces, festivals, etc. The core of the company is formed by Bart Baele, Caroline Rochlitz and Yves Degryse. In 2010, Berlin will be working on Holocene 5 in the Ruhr area. In addition, its members are also artists in residence at the STUK arts centre in Leuven.
