BAFF aims to make contemporary, metropolitan theatre on the basis of a European context and sense of identity. Its work alternates between original creations and existing plays and both domestic and international productions. The company aims to break new ground and tackle ‘the classics’ based on the belief that classic works form the necessary foundations upon which it can build. An important pillar in the new regime at the former Raamtheater is its collaboration with the Ghent theatre group Nunc. This collaboration was visible in the production Het Geslacht Borgia.
BAFF regards life itself as a source of inspiration and the urgency of presenting a particular work. The love of language and the fascination with space are also amongst the most important foundation stones for the company. Relationship, depth and wonderment are basic concepts in this regard.
BAFF views theatre as a collective work of art in which various autonomous art forms merge. In addition to the central focus on the author, actor and director as creative artists, a great deal of attention is devoted to the company’s own vision with regard to set design, costume design, lighting and sound.
BAFF runs two theatres where it presents not only its own work, but also that of other groups and individuals. Experience is coupled with young talent and finished creations are found alongside works-in-progress. BAFF also adds special touches in its programming. For example, in De Grote Alleenspraak (January 2009), the company presented a sample of generations of acting concepts in the course of a month. A festival of language and of the need to tell and show something, in which ten actors were given the opportunity to really speak their mind.
BAFF has been in existence since May 2008 and is a new construction on top of the old Raamtheater. Raamtheater was founded in 1978 out of dissatisfaction with the former KNS civic theatre and the prevailing climate in the theatre world at the time. After 30 years, the company has chosen a new and fresh approach to theatre in a scene which has undergone great changes. The artistic direction is in the hands of Tom Van Bauwel and Mathias De Prest is the business manager.
