Summerschool Rits, Campo, a.pass

From the 13th to the 18th of September ‘De Samenscholing’ (CAMPO), Idea (Rits) and a.pass jointly organize a Summer School at CAMPO victoria in Ghent. The Summer School involves two workshops -one by Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Michelle Ceballos and a second by the Slovenian artist Janez Janša-, several discussion evenings and a concluding performance Corpo/Ilicito by ‘La Pocha Nostra’.

Each day of the Summer School will be concluded by an evening discussion (8.30 pm) in CAMPO victoria. Visitors are welcome to attend these discussions that are hosted by our evening guests. All of them have significantly contributed to the research project that De Samenscholing has been involved in.

On Monday 13 September Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Michele Ceballos present the work of ‘La Pocha Nostra’. This subversive performance group is an enduring attempt to break barriers. ‘La Pocha Nostra’ has been labeled ‘ethno-techno art’ and ‘Chicano cyberpunk’. Gómez-Peña ingeniously blurs the borders between fixed reality and the liberating actions that he provokes.

On Tuesday 14 September Janez Janša discusses his work. He was born as Emil Hvratin but he and two other Slovenian artists had their names officially changed to Janez Janša in 2007, which happens to be the name of Slovenia’s economic-liberal and conservative president. Janša seeks to represent the machinations of power in works of art.

On Wednesday 15 September we welcome Hans-Werner Kroesinger, an exponent of the new German documentary theatre movement. In the workshop ‘the document as performance, the performance as a document’ at the Rits, Kroesinger worked with material concerning the genocide in Rwanda, the Rwanda tribunal, the books of general Dallaire and up-to-date sources on north-east Congo.

Video artist Sarah Vanagt presents her documentary Boulevard d’Ypres/Ieperlaan in which she portrays the ‘mediterranean’ street where she lives on Thursday 16 September. Boulevard d’Ypres/Ieperlaan is an audiovisual chronicle of a street in constant flux and an experimental documentary that renders voice to a motley collection of residents whose stories mingle in the heart of Europe. Sarah Vanagt as well directed a workshop at the Rits: participants produced, filmed and discussed a personal stream-of-consciousness.

On Friday 17 September Carina Molier discusses her documentary video art and the workshop she held at the Rits last year. During that week she focused on footage of ‘sans-papiers’ and the occupation of car park K (VUBULB) of the university in Brussels.

On the final evening (Saturday 18 September at 8.30 pm in CAMPO victoria) we present the unique performance Corpo/Ilicito by Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Michele Ceballos of ‘La Pocha Nostra’. In this performance ‘La Pocha Nostra’ investigates the fear of the OTHER – the smearing of ‘ the brown body’, intensified by the Bush Administration – as well as the rising culture of hope that opposes the old world order. Corpo/Ilicito verges on the border between the recent past and the possible future without lapsing into simple solutions or false hope.

We charge an entry fee of 12 to 9 euro (reduction fee) for this unique performance. We advise you to reserve your tickets well in advance as places are limited.
